In short: Created in 2016, the French region of Occitania merges diverse provinces into one entity. While it takes its name from a vast historical culture defined by the Occitan language, the decision sparked significant controversy among local populations who felt their unique identities were being erased by the new label.

The administrative region of Occitania was established on 1 January 2016 through the merger of Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées. Following a period of using the combined names, the Regional Council adopted the name Occitania on 24 June 2016, a change that officially took effect on 30 September 2016. The name itself references the historical region where the Occitan language—named for the word 'òc'—was the primary vernacular.

This modern territory encompasses a complex mosaic of historical provinces, including Languedoc, the County of Foix, and parts of Gascony, Guyenne, and the Països Catalans. These lands were integrated into the French royal domain at different times, often following centuries of conflict, such as the Albigensian Crusade (1208–1229) or the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659. The region's administrative heart is now in Toulouse, where the Regional Council meets at the Hôtel de région.

The choice of the name Occitania was not universally welcomed. Approximately 450,000 French Catalans living in the region expressed dismay, arguing that the name ignored their distinct cultural presence. This tension culminated in a demonstration in Perpignan on 10 September 2016, where thousands demanded that the region's name acknowledge the 'Pays catalan'. Despite these protests, the region remains a significant economic force, producing 7.3% of French economic output as of 2018.

Today, the region covers 72,724 square kilometers and is home to over 6 million people. While it draws on the legacy of the Counts of Toulouse and the medieval Occitan culture, it must balance this broad historical identity with the specific, enduring traditions of its constituent parts, such as the comarques of Roussillon or the distinct linguistic heritage of Gascony. The region continues to navigate the challenge of unifying these diverse historical threads under a single, modern administrative banner.
