Odisha: The Eastern Indian State That Redefined Its Own Name and Identity
In short: Once known as Orissa, this eastern Indian state holds a deep history spanning from ancient kingdoms to modern industrial power. Home to over 41 million people, it balances vast natural resources, including a significant portion of India's mineral wealth, with a commitment to preserving its unique ecological and cultural heritage.
Odisha, formerly spelled Orissa until 2011, is a state in eastern India with a rich historical tapestry. Its boundaries largely coincide with the ancient kingdom of Kalinga, famously conquered by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka in 261 BCE. The aftermath of the Kalinga War, which saw massive casualties, famously turned Ashoka toward Buddhism and pacifism. Throughout the centuries, the region was ruled by various dynasties, including the Somavamsis, the Eastern Gangas, and the Gajapatis, leaving behind architectural marvels like the Lingaraj temple in Bhubaneswar and the Konark temple.
The state's modern administrative structure was established during the British era, with the province of Orissa officially formed on 1 April 1936. Following India's independence, the state integrated numerous princely states, eventually settling into its current form. Today, Odisha is divided into 30 districts across three revenue divisions, governed by a unicameral legislature. Its capital, Bhubaneswar, is a focal point of recent development, having been selected as the first city in the Indian government's smart cities project in 2016.
Beyond its political history, Odisha is a land of immense natural diversity. It boasts a 485-kilometre coastline along the Bay of Bengal and is home to significant ecological sites like the Bhitarkanika National Park, a critical nesting ground for olive ridley sea turtles, and Chilika Lake, a massive brackish water lagoon. The state's economy is currently experiencing rapid growth, fueled by its abundant mineral reserves, including a quarter of India's iron ore and a third of its bauxite. With massive investments in steel and power generation, Odisha is positioning itself as a major industrial hub while navigating the challenges of conservation and urban expansion.
