In short: Formed in 2007, Odd Future was more than a rap group. This diverse Los Angeles collective of skaters, designers, and filmmakers rose to cult status through raw, profanity-dense lyrics and a chaotic energy that mirrored punk rock shows, eventually shaping the landscape of modern alternative hip-hop.

Founded in Los Angeles by Tyler, the Creator, the group—often abbreviated as OF or OFWGKTA—was a multi-disciplinary force. The founding lineup featured Syd, Travis "Taco" Bennett, Jasper Dolphin, Matt Martians, Left Brain, Hodgy, and Casey Veggies. The collective was known for a rebellious, brutally honest, and profanity-dense lyrical style that resonated with a growing cult following in the early 2010s. The original roster also included Brandun DeShay and Pyramid Vritra. This diverse group of artists included producers, actors, and even professional skateboarders.

The group's influence extended beyond music into television and fashion. They produced the Adult Swim sketch comedy series Loiter Squad, which aired from 2012 to 2014. While the group's official status has been disputed, they have remained largely inactive since 2015. Although members like Tyler, the Creator have hinted at a breakup, the collective has performed reunion shows as recently as 2018 and 2023. Their musical output included the debut mixtape The Odd Future Tape and the studio album The OF Tape Vol. 2. This creative output was complemented by the group's own record label, Odd Future Records.

The collective's journey was marked by both rapid ascent and internal shifts. While members like Frank Ocean achieved massive solo success, including a 2013 Grammy nomination for 'Channel Orange', the group faced logistical hurdles, such as the eviction of Williams and Martians from their apartment, which hindered their ability to attend label meetings. Despite these challenges, the Odd Future legacy remains a significant touchstone in hip-hop culture. The collective's rise was accompanied by various solo projects from members like Domo Genesis and Mike G. Even during periods of inactivity, the group's impact was felt through events like the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival.
