How a defensive pact of mountain valleys became a formidable European power
In short: The Old Swiss Confederacy began as a loose alliance of rural alpine communities seeking to protect trade routes. By perfecting the pike square and leveraging their unique mountain terrain, these cantons evolved from subordinate subjects of the Holy Roman Empire into a sovereign, thirteen-member power that dominated regional politics.
The foundation of the Old Swiss Confederacy is traced to the 1291 Federal Charter, a defensive pact between the rural communes of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden. These communities, known as the Forest States, held imperial immediacy within the Holy Roman Empire, a status granted due to the strategic importance of the Gotthard Pass. As the Habsburgs expanded their influence, this alliance grew into a rare union of rural and urban communes, incorporating major cities like Zurich and Bern by the mid-14th century.
Military innovation was central to the confederacy's rise. The perfection of the pike square allowed Swiss forces to secure decisive victories against the Habsburgs and the Duchy of Burgundy, establishing the confederacy as a significant force by the 1470s. This success drove expansion, growing the union from eight cantons to thirteen by 1513. While nominally part of the Holy Roman Empire for centuries, the confederacy achieved de facto independence following the 1499 Swabian War and formal recognition at the 1648 Peace of Westphalia.
Internal stability, however, was elusive. The Swiss Reformation fractured the confederacy into Catholic and Protestant factions, leading to civil wars and a paralyzed federal diet, or Tagsatzung. While the confederacy maintained a collective identity, it remained a fragmented collection of sovereign cantons rather than a unified state. This internal discord, combined with growing resistance to the absolutism of city-states, persisted until the confederacy fell to a French invasion in 1798, marking the end of the Ancien Régime and the transition toward the modern Swiss state.
