In short: Established in 1994, Paramount Group evolved from a local manufacturer of ground-based military systems into an international defense conglomerate. By acquiring specialized firms and partnering with aerospace giants like Boeing, the company expanded its reach across five continents, eventually filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in August 2024.

Founded by industrialist Ivor Ichikowitz in Sandton, South Africa, Paramount Group initially focused on developing armored vehicles. The company launched its first vehicle, the Marauder, in 2000, and later added models like the Maverick, Mbombe 6, and Matador to its portfolio. This early success in land-based systems provided the foundation for a broader strategy of rapid expansion into the aerospace and maritime sectors.

The company's growth was marked by a series of strategic acquisitions and joint ventures. In 2006, it entered the aerospace market by purchasing surplus Dassault Mirage F1s, which it later used for training services. By 2014, it had acquired the aerospace firm Aerosud and the engineering company Advanced Technologies and Engineering. These moves allowed the group to diversify its offerings, eventually organizing its operations into four distinct sectors: maritime systems, combat vehicles, aerospace technology, and advanced support services.

International collaboration became a hallmark of the group's operations. In 2014, it signed a memorandum of collaboration with Boeing to work on aviation technologies, including a militarized version of the Ahrlac reconnaissance aircraft. The firm also pursued partnerships in the Middle East and Europe, such as a 2023 agreement with Hellenic Defence Systems to produce loitering munitions. Despite this global footprint, which included clients in 28 countries by 2016, the company faced significant financial challenges, culminating in its 2024 bankruptcy filing with estimated liabilities reaching up to $10 billion.
