In short: While known for luxury sports cars like the Esperante, the Panoz name represents a massive footprint in professional racing. From engineering championship-winning chassis to owning legendary tracks and training the next generation of drivers, the family created an integrated ecosystem that shaped the landscape of American motorsport for decades.

Founded in 1989 by Dan Panoz, Panoz Auto Development emerged as a boutique manufacturer of high-performance vehicles, including the Roadster, AIV Roadster, and the Avezzano. However, the company's influence extends far beyond the production line. Under the guidance of Don Panoz, who lived from 1935 to 2018, the family built a vertically integrated racing empire. This included Élan Motorsports, a design and manufacturing house that acquired iconic builders like Van Diemen and G-Force Technologies to produce cars for series ranging from the Indy Racing League to the American Le Mans Series.

The Panoz family’s reach also encompassed the infrastructure of the sport itself. They owned and operated premier racing venues, including Road Atlanta in Georgia and the Sebring International Raceway in Florida, while also holding the International Motor Sports Association. In 1999, Don Panoz created the American Le Mans Series, which established a strategic partnership with the Automobile Club de l'Ouest to align regulations with the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. This era of ownership saw Panoz-built cars achieve significant international success, including a GT2 class victory at the 2006 24 Hours of Le Mans and a win at the 2006 12 Hours of Sebring.

The legacy of the Panoz group is also defined by its commitment to driver development. The Panoz Racing School operated at tracks like Road Atlanta, Sebring, and Texas Motor Speedway, where students practiced in purpose-built GT-RA cars to earn their SCCA regional racing licenses. By 2012, much of this infrastructure—including the American Le Mans Series and the racing schools—was sold to NASCAR. Despite these divestments, the Panoz family remains active in the automotive world today, continuing to design and build both street and race cars through Panoz, LLC and Élan Motorsports.
