How a Bosniak nationalist movement became the enduring backbone of Bosnian politics
In short: Founded in 1990 as a broad umbrella for Bosniak identity, the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) has navigated the collapse of Yugoslavia, a brutal war, and decades of shifting coalitions. Today, it remains a dominant force, balancing conservative roots with a persistent push for a centralized, Atlanticist state.
Established on 26 May 1990 in Sarajevo, the SDA was initially conceived by Alija Izetbegović as a representative body for the Muslim cultural-historical circle. Its origins reflect a long lineage of regional political advocacy, tracing back to the Muslim People's Organization of 1906 and the Yugoslav Muslim Organization. At its founding, the party functioned as a diverse coalition, bridging the gap between religiously oriented nationalists like Omer Behmen and secular figures such as Adil Zulfikarpašić.
The party’s trajectory was defined by the Bosnian War of Independence between 1992 and 1995. Under Izetbegović, the SDA led the government, coordinated military efforts through the creation of a national army, and navigated the complex diplomacy that produced the Dayton Agreement. This era solidified the party’s role as the primary political voice for Bosniaks, a position it has maintained through decades of governance at both the state and Federation levels.
Despite its electoral success, the SDA has faced significant challenges, including a major defeat in 2000 and recurring scandals involving senior officials like Fadil Novalić and Asim Sarajlić. While it advocates for a unitary state structure and strong ties to NATO and the European Union, it remains a center-right organization that balances nationalist support with a self-described moderate, secularist identity. Its influence extends well beyond Bosnia and Herzegovina, with sister-parties operating across the Balkans and a diaspora branch in St. Louis.
