How Paul McCartney built a global rock powerhouse after the Beatles' bitter end
In short: Following the Beatles' 1970 breakup, Paul McCartney faced harsh critical dismissal. He responded by forming Wings, a band that would defy the skeptics to dominate global charts. From a spontaneous university tour to a massive stadium presence, Wings became a commercial juggernaut, proving McCartney's enduring creative force beyond his former band.
Formed in 1971, Wings was a project born from McCartney's desire to start fresh. The core trio—Paul, his wife Linda McCartney, and Moody Blues alumnus Denny Laine—remained the group's anchor throughout its decade-long existence. Despite early criticism of their debut albums, Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway, the band found their footing with the 1973 release of Band on the Run. Recorded in Lagos, Nigeria, the album was a critical and commercial triumph, effectively silencing those who doubted McCartney's post-Beatles viability.
The band's trajectory was marked by frequent personnel shifts, including three lead guitarists and four drummers. Despite this instability, they achieved remarkable success, securing six number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Their 1975–76 world tour, which included a stop at Madison Square Garden, cemented their status as a premier live act. By the mid-1970s, while his former bandmates' solo careers were stalling, McCartney’s Wings were consistently topping charts, with five consecutive albums hitting number one in the US.
The end of Wings was as complex as its formation. A 1980 drug arrest in Japan led to the cancellation of a major tour and a temporary ban on their music in the country. By 1981, personal and financial tensions—specifically regarding royalty distributions and the band's future direction—led to Laine's departure. While McCartney officially acknowledged the band's dissolution in 1982, their legacy remains defined by a string of hits, including the record-breaking UK single 'Mull of Kintyre', which sold over 2 million copies.
