The goalkeeper who won the World Cup without ever playing a minute
In short: In 2018, Alphonse Areola achieved a rare feat in football history. While his teammates lifted the FIFA World Cup trophy in Russia, he was a squad member who had never earned a single senior cap for France. He remains the first player since 1986 to achieve this distinction.
Born in Paris to Filipino immigrants Cleto and Heidi, Areola’s path to professional football was defined by a series of high-stakes loans and rapid development. After training at the INF Clairefontaine centre at age 13, he joined the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) academy, signing his first professional contract in July 2009. His early career was marked by a successful loan at Lens during the 2013–14 season, where he earned the Ligue 2 Goalkeeper of the Year award and helped the club secure promotion.
Areola’s career is characterized by his ability to perform under pressure across Europe's top leagues. In Spain, playing for Villarreal on loan during the 2015–16 season, he set a club record by remaining unbeaten for 620 minutes without conceding a goal. This performance saw him keep 15 clean sheets, a tally surpassed only by Jan Oblak and Claudio Bravo that season. He also experienced success at the highest levels, including a La Liga title with Real Madrid in 2019–20 and a UEFA Europa Conference League title with West Ham United in 2023.
His international career provides a unique statistical anomaly. While he was a hero in the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup Final—saving two penalties to secure the title for France—his senior international journey was different. Despite being part of the 2018 World Cup-winning squad, he was the third-choice keeper. He eventually made his senior debut in September 2018 against Germany, keeping a clean sheet and earning man of the match honors.
