In short: Nestled where the Dinaric Alps meet the Zeta Plain, Podgorica has been renamed five times throughout its history. Once an Ottoman military stronghold and later the industrial center of Titograd, this city of rivers and hills now serves as the capital of independent Montenegro, blending ancient heritage with rapid modernization.

The city’s identity is etched into its name, which literally translates to 'Under the Hill,' referencing the cypress-covered Gorica hillock overlooking its center. Its strategic location at the confluence of the Ribnica and Morača rivers has attracted settlers since the late Stone Age. By the Roman era, the nearby town of Doclea thrived with a population of up to 10,000, benefiting from the fertile lowlands and defensive geography that have defined the region for millennia.

Following centuries of Ottoman rule, which began in 1474 and left behind a distinct military architecture, the city underwent a radical transformation in the 20th century. After World War II, it was renamed Titograd in 1946 to honor Josip Broz Tito, the president of Yugoslavia. During this period, the city shifted from a small town into a primate city, fueled by heavy industry like the 1969 Kombinat aluminum plant. This era also saw the establishment of the Veljko Vlahović University in 1974, cementing the city's role as a center for education and science.

The collapse of Yugoslavia brought another shift, with the city reclaiming its original name, Podgorica, in 1992. Today, the city serves as the primary gateway for Montenegro, hosting the nation's main international airport and acting as the central hub for its rail and road networks. While the city’s industrial past has largely given way to a service-based economy, it remains a site of political evolution, marked by the 2006 independence referendum and the 2023 election of its first non-DPS mayor in decades.
