In short: Nestled near the center of the South Indian Peninsula, Pollachi is a town defined by its lush Western Ghats surroundings and a robust agricultural economy. Beyond its role as a major marketplace for jaggery and cattle, this scenic municipality has become a favored destination for the Tamil film industry.

Pollachi, located in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, derives its name from the Tamil phrase Pozhil Vaitchi, meaning gifted with beauty. Historical edicts suggest the region was known by this name as far back as the Chola period. Situated at an average elevation of 293 metres on the banks of the Aliyar river, the town is physically defined by its proximity to the Western Ghats and the Palghat gap, which channels the southwest monsoon rains that provide the area with an average annual rainfall of 1,274 mm.

The town’s economy is deeply rooted in agriculture, serving as a vital hub for the trade of coconut, vegetables, and jaggery. This agricultural base supports secondary industries, including coir production and the weaving of distinctive cotton saris in nearby Negamam, known for their vibrant borders and heavy thread-work motifs. The landscape is also a significant asset; its scenic beauty has made it a popular location for film crews, while the surrounding hills host diverse ecological sites like the Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary and the Parambikulam-Aliyar multipurpose project, which harnesses local rivers through a complex network of dams and tunnels.

Administered by a municipality established in 1949, Pollachi has grown into a well-connected regional center. The 2011 census recorded a population of 90,180, with a notable literacy rate of 82.15%, significantly higher than the national average. Infrastructure development has been a priority, evidenced by the 2015 completion of the metre to broad gauge conversion on the Dindigul railway line and the 2017 conversion of the track between Pollachi and Podanur, a project costing ₹340 crore. Today, the town serves as a junction for major transport routes, linking the local economy to broader domestic and international markets via the Coimbatore International Airport.
