In short: Porbandar, a coastal headquarters in Gujarat, is defined by extreme environmental shifts. While its maritime location keeps it cooler than much of the state, its rainfall is notoriously erratic, fluctuating from nearly nothing to massive deluge in a single season.

Located at an average elevation of just 1 metre, Porbandar is a coastal city in the Indian state of Gujarat. It serves as the headquarters for the Porbandar district and is part of a twin-city arrangement with Chhaya, governed jointly by the Porbandar–Chhaya Municipal Corporation. Historically, the area was the seat of the Porbandar princely state, ruled by the Jethwa clan of Rajputs since at least the mid-16th century. The city is famously known as the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi and the figure Sudama. It was once the capital of the Porbandar princely state.

The region's climate is characterized by high volatility. It experiences a hot semi-arid climate with three distinct seasons: a cool period from October to March, a hot period through April, May, and early June, and a monsoonal wet season from mid-June to September. Rainfall is highly unpredictable; in 1918, annual rainfall dropped to 32.2 millimetres, whereas in 1983, a cyclone caused over 1,100 millimetres to fall in just four days, contributing to an annual total of 1,850.6 millimetres.

This environmental instability makes Porbandar's rainfall patterns comparable to the Brazilian sertão, northern Australia, and the Kiribatese Line Islands. Despite these extremes, the coastal position ensures the city remains relatively temperate, with average high temperatures staying below 35 °C in any month. The city also serves as one of the few remaining coastal habitats for the threatened marine mammal dugong. The local area features several wetlands that are perfect for birdwatching. These habitats support various species, including flamingos, teals, and curlews.
