The hollow skyscraper that rose from urban decay
In short: For 48 years, it was Africa's tallest residential tower. But behind its iconic cylindrical concrete walls, Ponte City has lived through eras of extreme luxury, notorious gang violence, and a hollow core filled with five-story heaps of rubbish.
Completed in 1975, Ponte City was designed by a team including Mannie Feldman, Manfred Hermer, and Rodney Grosskopff. Drawing inspiration from Chicago architect Bertrand Goldberg’s Marina City, the 55-storey tower was built with a unique cylindrical shape and a hollow interior. This central atrium, known as 'the core,' was a functional necessity: Johannesburg bylaws required windows in kitchens and bathrooms, so the open center allowed light to reach wedge-shaped apartments from both the street and the inner shaft.
The building's history is a cycle of prestige and peril. Initially a highly desirable address with views over Johannesburg, the tower's reputation collapsed between the late 1980s and 1990s. During this period, rising crime and gang activity turned the skyscraper into a symbol of urban decay. The central core became a dumping ground, accumulating rubbish five stories high as maintenance failed. The building's instability was so profound that in the mid-19thebibliography 90s, there was even speculation that the Gauteng province might convert the tower into a high-rise prison.
A major revitalization effort, 'New Ponte,' began in 2007 under the direction of David Selvan and Nour Addine Ayyoub. However, the subprime mortgage crisis halted the project's funding, leaving the building's future uncertain. By 2017, the tower had undergone a total refurbishment, returning to the market as a safe and affordable residential option. Today, the building remains a cultural icon, appearing in films like District 9 and serving as a subject for international photographers and novelists alike.
