The solitary resting place for Portugal's fallen soldiers in the French countryside
In short: Tucked away in Pas-de-Calais, the Portuguese Military Cemetery at Richebourg stands as a singular monument to a nation's sacrifice during the First World War. It remains the only cemetery of its kind in France, holding the remains of over 1,800 soldiers who fought far from their homeland.
The cemetery serves as the final resting place for 1,831 members of the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps. Construction of the site occurred between 1924 and 1928, primarily to consolidate the remains of those who perished during the brutal Battle of the Lys in April 1918. While many soldiers were interred here after the conflict, others were relocated to the site from various locations across Belgium, France, and former German prisoner of war camps. By 1939, the facility underwent an expansion, increasing its capacity from 1,500 graves to its current size.
The site is marked by both its historical significance and its somber mysteries. Among the 1,831 burials, 238 individuals remain unidentified. The cemetery also holds a unique place in military history as the burial site of João Augusto Ferreira de Almeida. A deserter during the war, he holds the distinction of being the only Portuguese soldier executed during the conflict and the final person ever executed by the Portuguese state.
In recent decades, the cemetery has become a focal point for international diplomacy and remembrance. In 2014, it was identified as a candidate for UNESCO World Cultural Heritage status, part of a broader effort to recognize significant sites across France and Belgium. High-profile visits have underscored its importance, including appearances by Portuguese leaders like Jorge Sampaio in 2004 and Pedro Passos Coelho in 2014. On 9 April 2018, the centenary of the Battle of the Lys, French President Emmanuel Macron and Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa presided over a ceremony attended by 2,000 guests, honoring the enduring legacy of the soldiers buried within these walls.
