In short: Born into the royal house of Tripura, Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barma traded a traditional throne for a modern political movement. Known as 'Bubagra,' he has transitioned from a high-profile media founder to a pivotal leader fighting for the rights of the Indigenous Tiprasa people.

Pradyot Manikya's political trajectory is defined by a shift from mainstream establishment to regional advocacy. Born in New Delhi in 1978, he was raised in the Tripura castle in Shillong, Meghalaya. Born into a political family, he is the son of Kirit Bikram Kishore Debbarma, a former MP thrice, and Bibhu Kumari Devi, who held Tripura's Revenue Minister post. Despite this pedigree, Manikya spent his youth as an active member of the Indian National Congress before breaking away in 2019.

His departure from the Congress was marked by a fallout over the National Register of Citizens (NRC) case and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Following his resignation, he pivoted toward the Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA), which he founded as an NGO to assist people during the COVID-19 crisis. This organization evolved into the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), a political vehicle that secured a landslide 18 out of 28 seats in the 2021 TTAADC election and 13 seats in the 2023 Tripura Assembly Election.

Manikya’s influence extends beyond the ballot box into media and cultural preservation. He founded 'The Northeast Today' in 2007, a publication that reached nearly 1,000,000 readers before he sold it in 2019 to focus on his regional platform. His leadership culminated in the Tiprasa Accord signed on March 2, 2024, a tripartite agreement between the TMP, the Tripura Government, and the Government of India aimed at safeguarding the identity, culture, and socio-economic conditions of the Indigenous Tiprasa people.
