How a political newcomer ended a quarter-century of rule in the state of Tripura
In short: Biplab Kumar Deb rose from a political outsider to the 10th Chief Minister of Tripura, leading the Bharatiya Janata Party to a historic victory in 2018. His tenure was marked by ambitious economic reforms and a series of unconventional public statements that frequently captured national attention and sparked intense debate.
Born in 1971 to parents who migrated to India during the Bangladesh Liberation War, Biplab Kumar Deb spent his formative years in Tripura before moving to New Delhi for 15 years. He returned to his home state to enter politics, eventually becoming the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party's Tripura unit in 2016. His campaign for the 2018 state election was notable for its focus on youth employment and the promise to implement the 7th Pay Commission, strategies that helped him defeat the long-standing Left Front government after 25 years in power.
As Chief Minister from 2018 to 2022, Deb oversaw significant administrative shifts, including the introduction of a 'deficit free' state budget and the renaming of the Agriculture Ministry to emphasize farmers' welfare. His government also facilitated the first direct paddy procurement by the Food Corporation of India at Minimum Support Price. Despite these economic initiatives, his tenure was frequently punctuated by controversial remarks. He famously suggested that internet and satellite technology existed during the Mahabharata era, questioned the legitimacy of international beauty pageants, and made polarizing comments regarding the intelligence of different ethnic groups.
Deb resigned as Chief Minister in May 2022, transitioning to the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of the Indian Parliament. In his federal role, he has advocated for the development of the agarwood sector and participated in international forums, such as the G-20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit. His career remains a study in the intersection of grassroots political mobilization and the volatile nature of public discourse in modern Indian democracy, reflecting a complex legacy that balances structural economic reform with a penchant for provocative, headline-grabbing rhetoric.
