In short: Before the platinum records and chart-topping hits, Stephen Paul Manderson lived a life of profound upheaval. Raised in a two-bedroom flat in East London, his journey through addiction, personal tragedy, and physical injury eventually transformed him into one of the UK's most recognizable musical voices.

Born in 1983, the artist known as Professor Green grew up in a chaotic environment on the Northwold housing estate in Upper Clapton, Hackney. His early years were marked by significant instability; his mother was 16 at his birth, and he was raised by a rotating group of family members, including his grandmother, great-grandmother, and uncles. The loss of his great-grandmother, Edie, when he was 13, left a lasting impact on his life. His early childhood was also marked by health challenges, as he required a stomach operation when he was only six weeks old.

His path to fame was far from linear. As a young man, he sold cannabis and used the drug daily between the ages of 16 and 24. He struggled with depression following the loss of his parents, and at age 24, he faced the trauma of identifying his father's body in a morgue. This tragedy prompted him to stop using drugs entirely to process the death. While he once dreamed of a legal career, he eventually left Stoke Newington School without any formal qualifications. The death of his father by suicide at age 24 served as a pivotal turning point for his sobriety. He had previously been a bright student with aspirations of becoming a lawyer.

Notwithstanding such difficulties, his music business expanded hugely, reaching 3.5 million total UK units sold. After clinching a £50,000 2008 contest via battle rap, he launched successful records including 'Alive Till I'm Dead' and 'At Your Inconvenience'. Beyond music, he has become a prominent mental health activist and patron of the charity CALM, using his platform to discuss his late diagnosis of autism and ADHD. His commercial success includes the platinum-certified album 'Monster' and the top-ten single 'Read All About It'. He has also worked as a brand ambassador for Puma and Relentable.
