In short: Ryland Grace, a molecular biologist turned junior high teacher, awakens on a starship with no memory of his identity or his mission. He soon discovers he is humanity's last hope against a star-consuming organism, forced into an unlikely interstellar partnership to prevent a catastrophic ice age on Earth.

In Andy Weir's 2021 novel, Project Hail Mary, the Sun is being drained by a single-celled organism named Astrophage. This entity consumes solar energy and carbon dioxide, causing the Sun to dim at an exponential rate. With a global ice age looming within thirty years, world governments grant Eva Stratt, a former European Space Agency administrator, near-total authority to solve the crisis. She recruits Grace for a suicide mission to Tau Ceti, the only nearby star seemingly resistant to the infection.

Grace wakes four years and eight months later to find his crew dead. He encounters an alien starship from 40 Eridani, piloted by an engineer he names Rocky. The two form a bond, communicating through a system Grace develops to bridge their vastly different biologies. They discover that a predator microbe, Taumoeba, can keep Astrophage populations in check. After a series of technical crises, they successfully engineer a solution to save both their home systems, though the effort forces Grace into a permanent exile on Rocky's planet, Erid.

The novel, which was a finalist for the 2022 Hugo Award, blends hard science with a narrative of cross-species cooperation. While some critics, such as Mary Robinette Kowal, noted that Grace's character occasionally ignores standard spaceflight safety protocols, others praised the book as a masterwork of survival and friendship. The story originated from Weir's abandoned project Zhek, which featured similar themes of energy-absorbing fuel. The adaptation, starring Ryan Gosling and Sandra Hüller, was released in theaters on March 20, 2026.
