How a striker's journey through Estonia led to the Premier League
In short: From the youth academies of Canada and Croatia to the heights of the Premier League, Promise David's career is a masterclass in perseverance. His unexpected rise through the Estonian third tier demonstrates how specific physical training can transform a player's trajectory and unlock elite-level potential.
Born in Canada to Nigerian parents, Promise David's professional ascent was far from linear. After developing in the Toronto FC Academy and playing for Vaughan Azzurri in 2016, his path took him through Croatia's Trnje academy and the American club FC Tulsa. However, it was a move to Estonia in February 2023 that proved to be a pivotal turning point in his career.
After arriving at Nõmme Kalju, David first played in Estonia's third tier before becoming a regular starter. He credited his rapid development to the club's intense training demands, specifically emphasizing the role of plyometric exercises. This physical foundation yielded significant results: he scored seven goals in his first Premium Liiga season and followed that with 14 goals and three assists in the 2024 league season.
This momentum carried him to the Belgian Pro League with Union Saint-Gilloise in July 2024. His impact was immediate, contributing to the club's first league title in 90 years after scoring 19 goals during the 2024–25 season. This success paved the way for a Premier League loan to Brighton & Hove Albion in August 2026, a move that included a potential £22 million obligation to buy.
David's international career has been equally dramatic. After being called up for Nigeria U23s in October 2022, he ultimately chose to represent his country of birth, Canada. Following FIFA's approval of his switch in February 2025, he became a key figure for Canada, helping the nation reach the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in its history during the 2026 tournament.
