The pygmy right whale is a living fossil that hides in plain sight
In short: Despite its name, the pygmy right whale is not a true right whale. This elusive, rarely seen creature is the smallest of all baleen whales and serves as a living link to an ancient family of cetaceans once thought to have gone extinct millions of years ago.
First described in 1846 by John Edward Gray, the pygmy right whale (Caperea marginata) has long puzzled scientists. While its name suggests a close relationship with the massive right whales, genetic studies—including a 2023 analysis—reveal it is more closely related to rorquals. It is now widely considered a living fossil, representing the sole surviving member of the Cetotheriidae family, a group of baleen whales previously believed to have vanished from the fossil record until 2012.
Physically, the species is distinct from all other extant whales. It reaches lengths of about 6 to 6.5 metres and possesses a unique skeletal structure, including broad, flat ribs that cover nearly half of its vertebral column. These anatomical features, along with a peculiar laryngeal sac positioned on the right side of its midline, suggest it is not a deep diver. Because it is rarely encountered at sea, most of our knowledge comes from individuals that have stranded on coastlines in the Southern Hemisphere, from Australia to Namibia.
The pygmy right whale remains one of the least-studied cetaceans in existence. Its elusive nature is compounded by its small, indistinct blow and slow, undulating swimming style. While sightings are infrequent, researchers have occasionally observed large groups, including over 100 individuals spotted near Portland, Victoria, in 2007. Despite its mysterious habits, the species has largely escaped the commercial exploitation that decimated other whale populations, and it continues to inhabit temperate waters throughout the Southern Hemisphere today.
