How a small aerial wing evolved into a potent, multi-national air force
In short: From two helicopters in 1967 to a sophisticated fleet of supersonic jets, the Qatar Emiri Air Force has undergone a massive transformation. By maintaining aircraft from various nations, the force has achieved strategic hedging, though this complexity has also invited significant logistical challenges and recent corruption investigations.
Established in 1974, the Qatar Emiri Air Force (QEAF) began as a small aerial support wing. Its origins trace back to 1967, when Qatar formed the Qatar Public Security Forces Air Wing with two Westland Whirlwind helicopters following the British announcement of their withdrawal from the Persian Gulf. The force gained combat capability in 1971 by acquiring three ex-RAF Hawker Hunter jet fighters.
The QEAF has pursued a strategy of 'strategic hedging' by acquiring aircraft from multiple countries, including the UK, France, and the US. This includes Dassault Rafale fighters, Eurofighter Typhoons, and McDonnell Douglas F-15QAs. While this provides diverse options, it creates a complex logistical landscape, as each type requires distinct maintenance and repair contracts. This complexity has faced criticism due to the nation's small size.
The force has seen significant combat action and expansion. In 1991, the QEAF participated in the Gulf War alongside allies. More recently, during the 2026 Iran war, the QEAF achieved its first aerial kills when an F-15QA shot down two Iranian Su-24 tactical bombers that had approached Al Udeid Air Base and Ras Laffan Industrial City. This engagement resulted in the capture of three Iranian fighter jet pilots.
The force's rapid modernization has not been without controversy. In November 2024, disclosures uncovered corruption and bribery related to Qatari arms contracts over the previous decade, leading to penalties for several business partners. Despite this, the QEAF continues to expand, including plans for the new Dukhan / Tamim Airbase and an agreement to host a contingent of F-15QAs at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho.
