In short: Unveiled in 2020, the Quest 2 transformed virtual reality from a specialist hobby into a mainstream consumer product. While it offered significant hardware leaps over its predecessor, the device also sparked intense debates regarding user privacy and the necessity of social media integration.

The Quest 2, released on October 13, 2020, represented a major evolutionary step for Reality Labs. Unlike the original Oculus Quest, which utilized dual OLED displays, the Quest 2 transitioned to a single, fast-switch LCD panel. By employing striped subpixels, the display achieved a 1832×1920 per-eye resolution and refresh rates hitting 120 Hz, which greatly diminished the 'screen-door effect'.

Under the hood, the device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2, a system on a chip derived from the Snapdragon 865 specifically designed for XR environments. It also saw a significant memory boost, featuring 6 GB of LPDDR4X RAM—a 2 GB increase over the first-generation model. This hardware allowed for more robust standalone performance using an Android-based operating system.

However, the device's success was accompanied by controversy. Concerns were voiced by regulators and critics, including Germany's Federal Cartel Office, about forcing users to sign in via Facebook. This mandate sparked fears regarding the collection of biometric and environmental data, leading to a temporary suspension of sales in Germany in September 2020. While Meta later introduced a 'Meta account' system to allow users to decouple their Facebook logins, privacy advocates noted that the new terms still required accurate personal data and allowed for extensive data use.

The Quest 2's lifecycle saw it transition from the Oculus brand to Meta branding as Facebook, Inc. rebranded in 2022. After being succeeded by the Quest 3 in 2023, it remained in production as a budget-friendly option until it was officially discontinued in September 2024, replaced by the Meta Quest 3S.
