In short: Once known as the Meta Quest platform, this operating system has evolved from its early embedded roots into a complex, Android-based environment. It now powers a range of virtual and mixed-reality experiences, navigating everything from 3D user interfaces to AI-driven avatar expressions and persistent spatial computing environments for users worldwide.

Meta Horizon OS traces its origins to the Oculus Rift DK1, released in 2013, which utilized an embedded operating system. Following the 2014 acquisition of Oculus VR by Facebook, development accelerated, leading to a shift toward the Android operating system with the 2018 launch of the Oculus Go. Today, the platform runs on the Android Open Source Project, incorporating a modified Linux kernel alongside proprietary Meta software, such as SDKs for 3D interface management. The system receives updates on an almost-monthly basis, reflecting its rapid iteration cycle.

The user experience is defined by its ability to toggle between fully immersive virtual spaces and passthrough modes, which utilize external cameras to blend digital content with the physical world. Navigation relies on a combination of hand tracking, speech recognition, and controllers. To ensure safety, the Guardian system allows users to define boundaries, while the Space Sense feature can detect real-world objects up to 9 feet away. Multitasking is handled through floating 2D windows that can be resized and arranged within a 3D environment, managed by a persistent Universal Menu.

The platform also integrates advanced AI features to enhance social presence. Since v59, generative AI has been used to approximate leg movements for avatars, and v71 introduced Audio to Expression, which translates speech into facial gestures. Despite its sophistication, the system has faced technical hurdles; in late 2024, a four-year-old bug in the Android file system caused boot failures for some users following an update. Meta addressed this by offering replacements and store credits, highlighting the complexities of maintaining a modern operating system across diverse hardware generations.
