In short: Raymond James Stadium is famous for its massive pirate ship, but its history is defined by legal battles and a manufacturing error. After a public vote passed by just 53%, the facility was constructed entirely at public expense, and its original red seats famously faded to a washed-out pink.

The stadium's existence was born from a high-stakes political struggle. In 1995, after purchasing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for $192 million, owner Malcolm Glazer lobbied for a replacement for the inadequate Tampa Stadium. While the team initially promised to cover half the costs if fans met a 50,000-season-ticket-deposit goal, the drive fell 17,000 short. Consequently, the facility was built at public expense following a 1996 referendum that passed by a narrow 53% to 47% margin.

The stadium's construction was not without legal friction. Former Tampa mayor Bill Poe challenged the legality of both the tax referendum and the subsequent lease, arguing that using public funds to support a private business violated the Florida constitution. However, the Supreme Court of Florida eventually ruled the lease constitutional, finding that the stadium provided a "public benefit."

Even the stadium's aesthetics faced a crisis. In 2003, roughly 50,000 red seats manufactured by Hussey Seating began fading into a pink shade. Investigations revealed a manufacturing error: the company had forgotten to include a UV inhibitor, a sunscreen-like component, in the plastic mixture. A $1.5 million agreement eventually allowed for the replacement of the seats in 2006.

Today, the multi-purpose venue serves as the home for the Buccaneers and the USF Bulls. It is easily identified by a 103-foot, 43-ton replica pirate ship in the north end zone, which features cannons that fire once for every point the Buccaneers score.
