From nightclub bouncer to bestselling fantasy author of the Forgotten Realms
In short: Before crafting epic battles for the Star Wars universe or the Legend of Drizzt, Robert Anthony Salvatore worked as a bouncer. This real-world experience later fueled the fierce, vivid combat scenes that helped him sell over 15 million books in the United States alone.
Born in Leominster, Massachusetts, on January 20, 1959, Salvatore’s path to literary success was unconventional. After changing his college major from computer science to journalism, he earned a Bachelor of Science in communications/media in 1981, followed by a Bachelor of Arts in English. Before committing to writing full-time, he worked as a bouncer, an experience he credits with providing the visceral detail found in his battle sequences.
His breakthrough came through the Forgotten Realms setting. After an unsuccessful attempt to publish a manuscript written by candlelight, he auditioned for TSR, Inc. in 1987 and won. His debut published novel, The Crystal Shard, was completed within two months and arrived in 1988. His Icewind Dale trilogy became a massive success, with the first two books selling more than 1.5 million copies.
Salvatore's influence extends into major franchises, most notably Star Wars. He wrote Vector Prime (1999), the first novel in the New Jedi Order series. The book remains controversial for the death of Chewbacca—a decision made by editors at Lucasfilm and Del Rey to raise the stakes of the Yuuzhan Vong threat. This narrative choice was later cited as a reason why Disney, after purchasing the rights in 2012, declared all pre-2014 Expanded Universe works non-canon in 2014.
Beyond novels, Salvatore has contributed to gaming and comics. He wrote the story for the video game Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone (2004) and served as creative director for 38 Studios, where he developed a 10,000-year backstory for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. While the game sold over one million units, the studio declared bankruptcy three months after its 2012 release, leaving Salvatore's $2 million fee unpaid.
