In short: Spanning from the Andean foothills to the Atlantic coast, Río Negro is a land of dramatic diversity. It is home to the only place on Earth where you can legally swim with southern right whales, while its interior remains a rugged, arid expanse shaped by powerful, constant westerly winds.

Located in northern Patagonia, Río Negro is Argentina's fourth-largest province, covering over 203,000 square kilometres. Its geography creates a striking climatic divide: the Andes mountains in the west block Pacific moisture, leaving much of the central plateau arid, while the coastal regions and northern areas receive slightly more precipitation. This variation is mirrored in the temperature, which ranges from freezing at high Andean peaks to over 40 degrees Celsius during summer in warmer parts of the province.

The province's human history is equally layered. While European explorers arrived in 1520 and Jesuit missions were established by 1670, the region has long been home to indigenous groups including the Tehuelches, Puelches, Pehuenches, and Mapuches. Contrary to older theories suggesting a late arrival, archaeological evidence confirms the Mapuche people inhabited the region long before European contact. By the turn of the 20th century, the province saw a wave of immigration from nations including Italy, Switzerland, and Germany, contributing to its modern, service-based economy.

Today, Río Negro is a hub for both industry and tourism. Its economy is diversified, supported by agriculture, light manufacturing, and mining, such as the gold operations at Calcatreu. Tourism is concentrated in two primary zones: the lake district near Bariloche, famous for its trekking and national parks, and the Atlantic coast, where the San Matías Gulf offers a unique marine experience. With a population that reached 750,768 by the 2022 census, the province remains the most populous in the Patagonian region.
