From extreme poverty to a high-tech hub: the transformation of northern Bangladesh
In short: Once labeled the poorest division in Bangladesh, the Rangpur Division is rewriting its economic destiny. Driven by industrial expansion and new technology, this northern frontier is moving beyond its agricultural roots to host specialized cybersecurity firms and a growing manufacturing sector.
For much of its recent history, Rangpur was defined by economic hardship. According to World Bank data from 2016, over one-third of the population lived in extreme poverty. The region's economy was traditionally anchored by agriculture, specifically the production of sugarcane, potatoes, and rice, alongside a landscape shaped by the Teesta and Jamuna rivers.
However, a significant structural shift is underway. The division has leveraged improved infrastructure—including the expansion of natural gas lines and enhanced rail and road connectivity—to foster industrial growth. Cities like Saidpur, which has been a railway workshop center since the British era, are seeing a rise in light engineering, textiles, and food processing. This momentum even extends to the technology sector; by 2026, the Rangpur Hi-Tech Park is expected to host specialized cybersecurity firms, such as DentiSystems, to support national financial infrastructure.
This modernization is supported by a robust transport network, including National Highway 5 and 21 inter-city trains. While the population has grown from approximately 15.8 million in 2011 to 17,610,956 in 2022, the region's identity remains a complex tapestry of history and diversity. The area's past includes Mughal rule, with parts of the region falling to Mansingh in 1575 and coming fully under the empire in 1686. Today, the population is predominantly Muslim (86.51%), with significant Hindu (12.98%) and various ethnic communities including the Santal, Munda, and Rajbanshi.
