In short: Step into a world of simulated thunderstorms, animatronic gorillas, and faux rock. What began as a single Minnesota location in 1994 has evolved into a massive international chain, using immersive environments to drive local tourism and deliver a highly stylized tropical atmosphere.

Rainforest Cafe, a jungle-themed restaurant chain owned by Houston-based Landry's, Inc., focuses on capturing the atmosphere of a tropical rainforest. To achieve this, the interiors utilize a sophisticated array of sensory elements: fog machines, waterfalls, and simulated thunderstorms that occur every few minutes, complete with subwoofers and strobe lights. The decor features artificial foliage on ceilings and walls, faux rock seating, and pillars designed to resemble tree trunks. Even the bar area is partitioned by a rain curtain and situated beneath a gigantic mushroom.

The immersive experience is driven largely by animatronic animals, including species such as elephants, orangutans, jaguars, and tigers. These creatures, manufactured by Russells Creative, LLC, are often positioned above diners' heads to create a sense of scale. The chain also employs a specific set of eight animal mascots known as "The Wild Bunch"—including Cha! Cha! the red-eyed tree frog and Maya the jaguar—to build brand identity through merchandise and menus. A ninth mascot, Julius Squeezer the python, was added in September 2026.

Since its debut on February 3, 1994, at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota, the chain has expanded significantly. While it maintains a strong presence in the United States, it has also opened locations in Canada, France, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, and Malta. The business model relies heavily on local tourism, offering a menu of American fare like burgers and seafood, alongside Mexican dishes and signature desserts like the volcano cake.
