A seven-term legislator in Uttar Pradesh, Raghuraj Pratap Singh remains a polarizing political fixture.
In short: Known as Raja Bhaiya, Raghuraj Pratap Singh has held his Kunda assembly seat for seven consecutive elections since 1993. His career is marked by shifting party alliances, high-level cabinet appointments, and a series of complex legal battles, including accusations of terrorism and murder, from which he has been cleared.
Born in 1969, Raghuraj Pratap Singh hails from the Bhadri estate of Oudh. He was the first in his family to enter politics, graduating from the University of Lucknow in 1989. Since 1993, he has consistently won the Kunda assembly constituency, often securing massive margins. In 2018, he founded his own political organization, the Jansatta Dal Loktantrik, and has served as a cabinet minister under both the Samajwadi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party administrations.
His political tenure has been punctuated by intense legal scrutiny. In 2002, he was arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) following allegations of kidnapping and threats, though he was acquitted of all charges by a special court in 2006. In 2013, he resigned from his cabinet position after being named in a case involving the death of Deputy Superintendent of Police Zia Ul Haq. However, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) later cleared him of involvement in that incident, and he was subsequently reappointed to his ministerial post.
Beyond his legislative work, Singh has faced various other allegations, including a probe into a multi-crore public distribution system scam and a 2025 FIR filed by his wife alleging harassment. Despite these controversies, his influence remains significant across the Pratapgarh region and parts of neighbouring Bihar. His career reflects the complex intersection of regional power, shifting political loyalties, and the legal challenges that often accompany long-standing political dominance in Indian state politics.
