How a global energy drink brand transformed a historic Brazilian football club
In short: In 2019, Red Bull GmbH moved beyond simple sponsorship to take full management of Clube Atlético Bragantino. This strategic takeover fundamentally altered the club's identity, replacing traditional black and white colors with a new red and white aesthetic, effectively creating a new club in the process.
Founded on 8 January 1928 by former members of Bragança Futebol Clube, the club was originally known as Clube Atlético Bragantino. For decades, it navigated the complexities of the Brazilian football league system, experiencing various promotions and relegations. Notable milestones included winning the Campeonato Paulista Second Division in 1988 and securing its first promotion to the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A in 1989 after winning the Série B.
The club's identity underwent a radical shift following a partnership deal announced on 26 March 2019. A contract was finalised in April 2019 after Red Bull GmbH initiated talks following the club's inability to ascend to the premier division. This agreement handed over the management of all football-related assets to the energy drink company. During the 2019 second division season, the team retained the name Bragantino with Red Bull appearing only as a sponsor.
By 2020, the transformation was complete with the introduction of the name Red Bull Bragantino. This included a new crest and a shift to red and white colors, departing from the club's traditional black and white. As part of this restructuring, Red Bull Brasil—the company's existing club founded in 2007—became the reserve team, eventually renamed Red Bull Bragantino II on 16 January 2023.
The side plays within Brazil's top division, Série A, alongside the highest level of São Paulo's state league, the Campeonato Paulista Série A1. Home fixtures occur at Estádio Nabi Abi Chedid, a venue constructed in 1949 that accommodates up to 21,210 spectators.
