In short: Robert Culp was a versatile force in American television, spanning five decades of performance. From his breakout as a Texas Ranger in the 1950s to his iconic partnership with Bill Cosby in I Spy, Culp redefined the leading man, seamlessly transitioning between gritty Westerns, complex spy dramas, and voice acting.

Born in 1930, Robert Culp’s career began in the late 1950s, most notably as the star of the CBS Western Trackdown, where he played Texas Ranger Hoby Gilman. This role established his presence in the genre, leading to numerous appearances in series like Rawhide, Gunsmoke, and The Virginian. By the mid-1960s, Culp had achieved international fame as Kelly Robinson in the espionage series I Spy. His role was groundbreaking, as he and co-star Bill Cosby portrayed secret agents, with Culp often contributing as a writer and director for the show.

Culp’s influence extended well beyond his most famous roles. He was a frequent collaborator on anthology series, including three memorable turns on The Outer Limits, and he became a recurring antagonist in the Columbo franchise, playing the murderer in four separate episodes. His versatility was further demonstrated in the 1980s as FBI Agent Bill Maxwell in The Greatest American Hero, a role he reprised in a spin-off pilot. Throughout his later years, he remained active, appearing in Everybody Loves Raymond and lending his voice to the character Dr. Wallace Breen in the video game Half-Life 2.

Beyond acting, Culp was a dedicated screenwriter and director, often seeking creative control over his projects. He wrote scripts for seven episodes of I Spy and directed two episodes of The Greatest American Hero. At the time of his death in 2010 at age 79, he was actively developing a film adaptation of his favorite childhood comic strip, Terry and the Pirates. His legacy remains that of a tireless craftsman who navigated the evolving landscape of television and film with a unique blend of erudition and grit.
