In short: Rochester, Minnesota, began as a simple stagecoach stop on the Zumbro River. Yet, a catastrophic tornado in 1883 forced the community to build a medical infrastructure from scratch. Today, that legacy of necessity has evolved into the world-renowned Mayo Clinic, anchoring the city’s identity as a global healthcare hub.

Founded in 1854 by George Head, Rochester was originally a humble camping ground for wagon trains and a stagecoach hub. Its early growth was steady but unremarkable until the 1883 tornado leveled much of the town. With 37 people dead and hundreds injured, the community faced a dire crisis: there was no local medical facility to treat the wounded. William W. Mayo, who had arrived in 1863 as a Civil War examining surgeon, stepped in alongside his sons to provide emergency care.

This tragedy became a turning point. Following the disaster, the Sisters of St. Francis collaborated with the Mayo family to establish St. Marys Hospital in 1889. This institution served as the foundation for what would eventually evolve into the Mayo Clinic. The clinic grew into a massive network of hospitals, research centers, and education facilities, becoming the city's largest employer and a global leader in medical innovation. The Mayo family’s influence remains visible today through landmarks like the Mayowood estate and the historic Plummer House.

Beyond medicine, Rochester has navigated significant environmental and economic shifts. In 1978, severe flooding prompted an extensive, multi-decade flood-control project that reshaped the city’s river systems. Today, the city balances its healthcare-heavy economy with high-technology manufacturing and agriculture, producing goods ranging from computer equipment to dairy. While it remains a major regional center, the city retains a unique character, situated at the edge of the Driftless Area—a region defined by its rugged, unglaciated terrain and deep river valleys.
