From five-star recruit to NBA journeyman: the rapid rise of Rob Dillingham
In short: In just a few years, Rob Dillingham has navigated high-profile college commitments, professional leagues, and a series of high-stakes NBA trades. Follow the trajectory of a player whose career has been defined by sudden shifts in scenery and elite-level talent.
Born in Hickory, North Carolina, in early 2005, Rob Dillingham emerged as a premier basketball talent during his high school years. A highly-rated five-star recruit, his path was marked by significant transitions. He played for North Carolina's Combine Academy, where he earned Charlotte Observer Player of the Year honors after a dominant sophomore season. His journey then took him to Kanye West's Donda Academy in California before he eventually moved to the Overtime Elite league in Atlanta, Georgia.
Dilling<0xC2>ang's collegiate and professional career has been characterized by rapid movement between organizations. After initially committing to NC State in late 2021, he reversed his decision in mid-2022 to join the Kentucky Wildcats. His time at Kentucky preceded his entry into the 2024 NBA draft, where he was selected 8th overall by the San Antonio Spurs. However, a draft-night trade immediately sent him to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The latter part of his early career has seen a succession of trades. After nearly two seasons in Minnesota, Dillingham was traded to the Chicago Bulls in February 2026. After undergoing surgery to excise a ganglion cyst from his right wrist in April 2026, he spent time convalescing while in Chicago. By late September 2026, his career saw further movement when he was traded to the Charlotte Hornets, only to be released one day later.
Despite the frequent changes in team rosters, Dillingham's individual impact has been notable since his youth. The tournament's MVP award was his following a 2021 FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship victory with Team USA.
