In short: In 1985, Roger Craig achieved a statistical feat so rare that only two other players in NFL history have matched it. While most backs focus on power, Craig’s distinctive high-knee technique and receiving prowess transformed the running back position into a dual-threat weapon.

Roger Craig’s 1985 season remains a landmark in professional football. No other NFL player had previously achieved 1,000 receiving and 1,000 rushing yards during one season. He achieved this by rushing for 1,050 yards on 2,14 carries and leading the league with 92 receptions for 1,016 yards. This extraordinary versatility allowed him to join an elite group alongside Marshall Faulk and Christian McCaffrey as the only others to reach these dual milestones.

His success was deeply rooted in his athleticism, developed long before his professional career. A standout at Davenport Central High School in Iowa, Craig was an accomplished track and field athlete, finishing second in both the 110 and 400 hurdles at the state championships in 1979. He even broke a school record in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.43 seconds. This background contributed to the high-knee running form that became his professional trademark.

During his tenure with the San Francisco 49ers, Craig was a cornerstone of a dynasty, winning three Super Bowls. His ability to impact the game in the air was equally significant; he was one of only three running backs to record 100 receiving yards in a single Super Bowl, a feat he achieved in Super Bowl XXIII. His versatility and steady performance secured his 1980s All-Decade Team selection and 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame induction.
