From professional goalkeeper to elite mixed martial artist, the unconventional path of Roman Dolidze
In short: Born in Georgia and once a professional soccer goalkeeper in Turkey, Roman Dolidze transitioned to combat sports in his late twenties. After mastering grappling, he entered the UFC, where he navigated complex anti-doping regulations and a series of high-stakes bouts, ultimately becoming a notable figure in the light heavyweight division.
Roman Dolidze, born in 1988 in Batumi, Georgia, followed a non-traditional route to professional mixed martial arts. Before his combat career, he spent eight years playing soccer, including three years as a professional goalkeeper in Turkey. At age 20, he moved to Ukraine to study shipbuilding engineering and business administration, eventually discovering Sambo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and wrestling. His grappling prowess led to titles as a World Grappling Champion and an ADCC Asia & Oceania champion at 99 kg.
Dolidze began his professional MMA journey in 2016. His early career was marked by a successful run in the Ukrainian circuit, where he secured the WWFC Light Heavyweight title. However, his entry into the UFC faced significant hurdles. In 2019, he was suspended for one year following a positive test for clomiphene and metabolites of dehydrochlormethyltestosterone. By 2020, Dolidze and other athletes faced challenges regarding trace amounts of long-term metabolites pulsing in their systems. This led to special hearings with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which granted him a temporary license after a period of rigorous bimonthly testing.
Throughout his UFC tenure, Dolidze has demonstrated versatility, competing in both middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. His career includes three Performance of the Night awards, earned through victories over Kyle Daukaus, Phil Hawes, and Jack Hermansson. His 2022 win against Hermansson was particularly recognized, earning him a ranking as the number nine upset of the year. Despite various fight cancellations due to injuries, COVID-19 protocols, and administrative issues, Dolidze has remained a persistent competitor, facing high-profile opponents like Marvin Vettori and Anthony Smith. His career reflects the volatility of professional fighting, where success is often defined by adaptability to injuries, shifting schedules, and evolving anti-doping standards.
