The striker who escaped a police pursuit during a World Cup qualifier
In short: Enner Valencia's career is a study in extremes: from sleeping in club stables due to poverty to becoming Ecuador's greatest goalscorer. But his most dramatic moment occurred on the pitch, where a legal warrant turned a high-stakes international match into a literal police chase.
Born in the Esmeraldas Province, Valencia faced extreme hardship early on. He arrived at Emelec with so little money that he lived in rudimentary lodgings at the stadium and struggled to afford enough food. His transition from a winger to a striker was catalyzed by the tragic death of teammate Christian Benítez, leading to a career defined by prolific scoring across Mexico, Turkey, and Brazil.
Valencia’s international legacy is historic. He is Ecuador's all-time leading scorer with 49 goals and holds a unique record for scoring six consecutive goals across three different World Cup tournaments (2014, 2022, and 2026). His scoring prowess has seen him win multiple Golden Boots, including the Liga MX Clausura and the CONCACAF Champions League.
However, his career has been marked by bizarre off-field incidents. In 2016, a warrant for unpaid child support led to a surreal scene: police arrived at a World Cup qualifier against Chile. Valencia appeared to collapse with an injury in the 82nd minute, only for the ambulance cart transporting him to be pursued by Ecuadorian police. This moment of high-tension drama remains one of the most unusual intersections of law and sport.
Despite these hurdles, Valencia remains a national icon. He earned his 100th cap in 2025, securing a rare victory over Argentina. After a storied career that saw him play for clubs like West Ham United and Fenerbahçe, he retired from international play in 2026 following his third World Cup appearance.
