In short: Founded as a modest local team in 1917, Rosenborg Ballklub transformed into a European powerhouse. By prioritizing attacking football and professionalizing their operations in the late 1980s, they secured 13 consecutive league titles, fundamentally reshaping the landscape of Norwegian sport while consistently challenging Europe's elite clubs on the continental stage.

Originally established as Sportsklubben Odd by 12 young men in 1917, the club struggled for years to gain entry into regional leagues. It was not until 1928 that they adopted the name Rosenborg Ballklub. For decades, the team moved between lower divisions, but a talented generation of youth players in the 1950s eventually laid the groundwork for the club's rise to prominence in the 1960s. Their first major trophy, the Norwegian Cup, arrived in 1960, followed by their first league title in 1967.

The club's true golden era began in 1988, fueled by fresh capital and the return of manager Nils Arne Eggen. Departing from the defensive styles common in Norwegian football, Rosenborg committed to an aggressive, crowd-pleasing 4–4–3 attacking philosophy. This strategy proved devastatingly effective, leading to 13 consecutive league championships between 1992 and 2004. During this period, the club became a fixture in the UEFA Champions League, qualifying for the group stage 11 times between 1995 and 2007.

Rosenborg's European campaigns produced historic victories, including a 2–1 win against Milan in 1996 and a 3–0 defeat of Borussia Dortmund in 1999. However, the club's dominance eventually waned as increased financial investment across the league leveled the playing field. Despite subsequent periods of instability and frequent coaching changes, Rosenborg remains a central figure in Norwegian football, maintaining a record 26 league titles and a legacy defined by their unique, attacking identity.
