How a street named after its players transformed Norwegian football history
In short: From the fourth tier to national champions, Strømsgodset Toppfotball’s journey is defined by dramatic shifts. Once known as the 'Rødgata Boys,' this Drammen-based club has survived near-bankruptcy and relegation to become a mainstay of the Norwegian top flight.
The club's golden era began in the late 1960s and early 1970s, driven by a squad of young players led by striker Steinar Pettersen. This group earned the nickname 'Rødgata Boys,' named after the street they lived on in Drammen. Their rapid ascent saw them climb from the fourth tier to the top flight, securing the league title in 1970 and winning the Norwegian Cup in 1969, 1970, and 1973. This remarkable rise was fuelled by the talent of Steinar Pettersen. Their early dominance helped establish the club as a significant force in Norwegian football.
However, success was not constant. The club faced significant volatility, including a drop to the third tier in 1986 before returning to the top flight in 1989. While they secured another Norwegian Cup in 1991, the 1990s were marked by a cycle of promotions and relegations. Even a bronze medal finish in 1997 was tempered by a cup final defeat that same year. This period of turbulence defined much of their late twentieth-century history. They struggled to maintain consistency during these decades of movement between divisions.
Financial instability nearly ended the club's professional existence in 2005, bringing them to the brink of bankruptcy. A rescue by local investors revitalized the organization, leading to a modern renaissance. This new era saw them win the Norwegian Cup in 2010 and achieve a landmark second league title in 2013 after finishing as runners-up in 2012. Today, they play at Marienlyst Stadium, a venue that has evolved from the traditional 'Gamle Gress' to a modern facility featuring artificial grass and specialized safe-standing sections. The club's record attendance was set in 1969 against Rosenborg BK. This historic crowd remains a significant benchmark for the supporters at Marienlyst Stadium.
