The $273 million seizure: Inside the world of Malaysia's most famous political spouse
In short: When Malaysian authorities raided properties linked to Rosmah Mansor, they uncovered the largest seizure in the nation's history. From hundreds of designer handbags to massive caches of foreign currency, the sheer scale of the recovered luxury goods offered a startling glimpse into a lifestyle of unprecedented extravagance.
The scale of the items recovered by Malaysian police during investigations into the 1MDB scandal remains unprecedented. Authorities seized 284 boxes of designer handbags, 72 large luggage bags filled with various currencies, and 423 luxury wristwatches from brands such as Rolex, Chopard, and Richard Mille. The total estimated value of the goods was between US$223 million and US$273 million, a find described by police as the largest seizure in Malaysian history.
The investigation also revealed a pattern of high-end international commerce. A Lebanese jewellery firm, Global Royalty Trading SAL, filed a lawsuit alleging that a consignment of jewellery delivered to Rosmah in February 2018 was for her evaluation and purchase. Similarly, Dubai-based Adi Hasan AlFardan Jewellery requested the return of over US$5 million worth of jewellery delivered in March 2018, claiming payment was never made. Some of these items, including a US$220,000 white gold diamond bracelet, were eventually stored in the vaults of Bank Negara Malaysia.
Beyond the physical goods, Rosmah's legal history is marked by significant convictions and acquittals. In September 2022, she was found guilty of corruption related to a solar hybrid power project in Sarawak, resulting in a ten-year prison sentence and a fine of RM970 million. Her judicial outcomes have varied; by December 2024, a high court cleared her of seventeen money laundering and tax evasion charges because evidence was lacking.
