In short: In 1951, Royal Dano delivered a death scene so visceral it drove an entire test audience out of the cinema. Director John Huston described the reaction as a sickening event for war-weary Americans. Today, that specific performance is likely lost to history forever.

Royal Dano was a versatile character actor whose career spanned 46 years, spanning roles from cowboys and villains to historical figures. A son of an Irish mother and a newspaper printer, Dano arrived in New York City during 1922; he later performed for soldiers as a sergeant within the 44th Special Service Provisional Company whilst fighting in World War II before becoming a famous actor.

His most notable contribution to American culture was providing the voice of Abraham Lincoln. Walt Disney personally selected Dano for this role because his vocal qualities best matched historical descriptions. Dano's vocals were featured in several major attractions: first at the 1964 New York World's Fair, then moved to Disneyland in 1965, and later used in Florida's 'Hall of Presidents' starting in 1971.

The actor is perhaps most famously remembered for a polarizing moment during the filming of The Red Badge of Courage. Dano played 'The Tattered Man,' delivering a death scene so disturbing that it caused an immediate mass exodus from the theater during its initial test screening. Director John Huston noted that while Dano provided a human touch to the role, the 1951 audience rejected it entirely.

Following this backlash, the film was immediately recut to remove the scene. While the performance is legendary in film history for its intensity, it is believed to have been lost; even as early as 1972, Huston expressed doubt that any footage of the scene still exists. Dano continued to work until his death from pulmonary fibrosis in 1994, leaving a legacy of bizarre and macabre performances.
