In short: Formed in London in 2002, Razorlight became a defining indie rock act with chart-topping hits like America. Yet, the band’s history is defined by constant volatility, including bitter songwriting disputes, public departures, and a decade-long hiatus. Today, the original lineup has reunited, proving that even the most fractured bands can return.

Founded by Johnny Borrell in 2002, Razorlight quickly rose to prominence with their debut album Up All Night, which reached number 3 in the UK charts in 2004. The band’s trajectory was marked by rapid success and intense internal pressure. By their second, self-titled album in 2006, they had secured a UK number 1 single with America, though the period was marred by public conflict between Borrell and drummer Andy Burrows over songwriting credits.

The band’s stability crumbled following the 2008 release of Slipway Fires. Borrell later described the record as a product of greed and personal mental strain, noting that the songs were forced into a pop format against his better judgment. Burrows departed in 2009, citing a toxic relationship with Borrell, and the band subsequently underwent numerous lineup changes. By 2013, Razorlight entered an indefinite hiatus after Mercury Records refused to release a completed fourth album, leading Borrell to pursue a solo career that saw his debut album sell only 594 copies in its first week.

Despite these setbacks, the band persisted through various iterations. A significant turning point occurred in 2021 when the original lineup—Borrell, Björn Ågren, Carl Dalemo, and Burrows—reunited for a livestreamed concert. This reconciliation paved the way for their fifth studio album, Planet Nowhere, released in 2024. The band’s history reflects the precarious nature of creative partnerships, where artistic vision, commercial demands, and personal ego often collide, yet the enduring appeal of their early work has kept the project alive through two decades of turbulence.
