From Mexican independent circuits to WWE stardom: the rise of Rey Fénix
In short: Born in 1990, the Mexican professional wrestler known as Rey Fénix has built a prolific career across the globe. From his early days as Máscara Oriental to becoming a multi-time champion in major promotions like AAA and AEW, his journey defines the modern era of lucha libre.
Fénix began his professional wrestling career in 2005 on the Mexican independent circuit, performing under the name Máscara Oriental. During this period, he competed in various locations including Puebla, Pachuca, and Querétaro. His career reached a significant milestone in January 2011 when he signed with Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, making his debut in a six-man tag team match alongside Atomic Boy and Gato Eveready. He initially gained experience working for promotions such as NWA Mexico and DTU. These early opportunities helped establish his presence within the Mexican wrestling scene.
His tenure with AAA was marked by several historic achievements. In March 2013, he became the inaugural AAA Fusión Champion after winning a four-way elimination final. He also became the first wrestler in the Lucha Underground promotion to win all three of its championships: the Gift of the Gods Championship, the Lucha Underground Championship, and the Lucha Underground Trios Championship. His success in AAA included winning the AAA World Cruiserweight title. He also secured the AAA Mega Championship during his time with the company.
After leaving AAA in September 2016, Fénix underwent several name changes due to trademarking issues, performing as Fénix el Rey before settling on the stylized Rey Fenix. His global presence includes bouts in Japan for Pro Wrestling Wave and Pro Wrestling Noah, alongside appearances for US-based firms like PWG, Impact Wrestling, and AEW. The wrestler has also competed in Japan at Tokyo's Korakuen Hall. His international experience extends to the American independent circuit, where he has worked for Chikara.
Today, Fénix is a prominent figure in WWE, performing on the SmackDown brand. He is also recognized for his work in the Lucha Brothers tag team alongside his elder brother, Penta. He is a former AEW International Champion and AEW World Tag Team Champion. Additionally, he has held the AEW World Trios Championship.
