In short: Founded by pioneers fleeing flood-ravaged canals in 1874, Safford has evolved from a rugged settlement into a vital micropolitan center. Today, this Graham County seat balances its agricultural heritage with massive modern mining operations and a unique commitment to preserving the dark skies essential for world-class astronomical research.

Safford was established in early 1874 by Joshua Eaton Bailey, Hiram Kennedy, and Edward Tuttle. The trio had previously attempted to farm in Gila Bend, but after their irrigation infrastructure was destroyed by summer floods in 1873, they relocated to the Gila Valley. The town was later named for Anson P. K. Safford, a former Arizona Territorial Governor. It officially incorporated as a town in 1901 and transitioned to city status in 1955.

The local economy is anchored by a mix of traditional and industrial sectors. Agriculture remains a staple, symbolized by the city's cotton fields and gin. However, the landscape is dominated by large-scale mining, specifically the operations of Freeport-McMoRan, which manages significant new mining facilities just north of the city. Additionally, the region hosts several correctional institutions, including the Arizona State Prison Complex and a federal facility, which serve as major employers for the population of 10,129.

Geography plays a defining role in Safford’s identity, particularly the Pinaleño Mountains to the southwest. These mountains possess the greatest vertical relief of any range in Arizona and provide the high-altitude, dark-sky conditions necessary for the Mount Graham International Observatory. To protect the clarity of research conducted at the Large Binocular Telescope and other facilities, Safford and the neighboring town of Thatcher utilize low-output street lighting. This scientific focus extends to the Discovery Park Campus, which offers public education on astronomy and local ecology, bridging the gap between the city’s industrial present and the vast, clear skies above.
