In short: Known as the Turmeric City of India, Sangli is the world's leading hub for the spice trade. Yet, this Maharashtra metropolis is far more than a commodity center. From its status as an emerging medical hub to its deep roots in Marathi drama, Sangli offers a complex, modern industrial landscape.

Situated on the banks of the Krishna River in south-western India, Sangli has evolved from its medieval origins as the capital of the Chalukya Empire into a bustling modern city. Its name, derived from the Marathi words for 'six lanes,' reflects a history that includes periods under the Mughal Empire and the British-era Bombay Presidency. The city officially separated from the Miraj Jahangir in 1801 following a family dispute between Chintamanrao Patwardhan and his uncle, Gangadharrao Patwardhan, eventually becoming part of the newly formed state of Maharashtra in 1961.

Economically, Sangli is a powerhouse of agricultural production and processing. Beyond its dominance in the global turmeric trade, the region is a major center for sugar production, housing over 30 sugar factories, including one of the largest in Asia. The surrounding Krishna Valley also supports a thriving wine industry. This agricultural wealth is complemented by a growing industrial and service sector, with a Software Technology Park currently under development and a robust transportation network connecting the city to major Indian hubs.

The city is increasingly recognized for its social and cultural contributions. Together with its twin city, Miraj, it forms a significant medical corridor with over 1,000 hospitals and clinics, attracting international patients. Culturally, Sangli is celebrated as the capital of Marathi dramas, while its neighbor Miraj is renowned for the export of musical instruments. With a semi-arid climate and a population that is 95% Marathi-speaking, the city balances its traditional roots with aspirations as an emerging 'Chess City' and a leader in air quality, having been ranked as having the cleanest air in Maharashtra in 2024.
