In short: Known in ancient times as the end of the earth, Sanya served as a desolate place of banishment for out-of-favor officials. Today, this southernmost prefecture-level city on Hainan Island has transformed into a luxury tourism hub, home to seven-star resorts, massive medical tourism zones, and a major naval base.

Sanya's history is defined by its extreme isolation. During the Qin dynasty, from 221 to 206 BCE, the region was known as Yazhou and served as a remote outpost for political exiles. This reputation for being at the edge of the world persisted for centuries, though the city eventually evolved into a significant administrative center. By 1987, it was officially established as the city of Sanya, marking its transition from a quiet county to a modern prefecture-level city.

The city's geography is as striking as its history. Situated at 18° 15' N latitude, it features a tropical wet and dry climate with year-round warmth, where water temperatures rarely dip below 22 °C. This environment supports a diverse ecosystem, including a 4,000-hectare protected coral reef. However, Sanya faces significant environmental challenges, as it is among the Chinese coastal cities most vulnerable to rising sea levels. These risks have even impacted infrastructure development, such as the construction of the Sanya Hongtangwan International Airport, which has been halted since 2020 due to environmental concerns.

Beyond its role as a tourist destination—hosting events ranging from the Miss World contest to the Volvo Ocean Race—Sanya is a center for specialized development. It houses the Yulin Naval Base, a critical facility for the People's Liberation Army Navy's ballistic nuclear missile fleet. Simultaneously, the city is pioneering medical tourism through the Boao Hope City pilot zone. This special zone allows for the use of imported medical technologies and drugs not yet approved elsewhere in China, attracting hundreds of thousands of medical tourists annually. As the city balances its military, environmental, and commercial interests, it remains a unique intersection of China's past isolation and its modern global ambitions.
