The first BJP Chief Minister of Assam and his political evolution
In short: From student leader to Union Cabinet Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal's career is defined by a pivotal shift in regional politics. He broke historical barriers as the first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Minister of Assam, navigating complex issues of migration and identity that shaped modern Indian governance.
Born in 1962 in Dibrugarh, Sonowal began his public life as a student activist. Between 1992 and 1999, he led the All Assam Students Union (AASU), later heading the North East Students Organisation until 2000. His early political career was tied to the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), but he resigned from executive posts in 2011 over a dispute regarding the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunal) Act, 1983. Sonowal joined the BJP in February 2011 and quickly ascended through the ranks. He served as the State President of the Assam unit starting in 2012 and was appointed to head the state's Lok Sabha elections in 2014.
His tenure as Chief Minister began on May 19, 2016, when he won the assembly election from the Majuli constituency, making him the first leader from the BJP to hold that office. His governance was marked by a focus on cultural and infrastructure initiatives, including the establishment of the Guwahati International Film Festival in 2018. After resigning as Chief Minister in 2021, he moved into national roles, serving as the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and the Minister of AYUSH. He currently serves as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha and holds a seat in the Lok Sabha for Dibrugarh. He previously held a seat in the Lok Sabha representing Lakhimpur from 2014 to 2016. While leading the state, he acted as India's Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports. He currently sits on the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs.
