The boy band that survived a 'lukewarm' debut to lead P-pop
In short: SB19 didn't just enter the music scene; they fought for it. After their first single failed to gain traction, the group faced a real threat of disbanding. Today, they are the "Kings of P-pop," having transitioned from struggling trainees to headlining global stages like Lollapalooza.
The origins of SB19 are rooted in a 'cultural hybrid' experiment. In 2016, ShowBT Philippines—a subsidiary of the South Korean entertainment company ShowBT—began searching for local talent to localize K-pop culture. From 300 applicants, seven members were selected for an exhausting training regimen involving ballet, vocals, and personality development. The moniker SB19 pays homage to their origins; 'SB' denotes Sound Break (symbolising an aim for global fame), whereas '19' reflects the numerical gap between South Korea’s (+82) and the Philippines’ (+63) international dialling codes.
Their journey toward achievement lacked a straight trajectory. Their 2018 debut single, "Tilaluha," received a weak reception, leaving the members so disillusioned by the lack of earnings that they nearly called it quits. It wasn't until 2019 that they pivoted to dance-pop with "Go Up." The song went viral on Twitter, leading to a mainstream breakthrough, a recording deal with Sony Music Philippines, and a sold-out concert at the Cuneta Astrodome where 3,500 free tickets were claimed in just three minutes.
By 2021, the group shifted gears again, incorporating hip-hop and EDM into their sound. This era saw them achieve global reach, with the single "Mapa" becoming one of the most-searched songs globally on Google in 2021. In 2023, they transitioned to self-management by founding 1Z Entertainment. Since then, they have achieved historic milestones, including being the first Filipino act to top Billboard's World Digital Song Sales and the first Filipino artist to perform at Lollapalooza.
