Hidden deep within the Apuseni Mountains lies a massive, ancient, subterranean frozen wonder.
In short: Scărișoara Cave is a natural marvel in Romania, housing a glacier that has persisted for 3,500 years. This ice-filled abyss, featuring towering frozen cliffs and delicate stalagmites, serves as a living laboratory for scientists and a breathtaking destination for those descending into its chilly, subterranean chambers.
Located at an altitude of approximately 1,150 meters in the Apuseni Mountains, Scărișoara Cave is a significant karst feature formed within Upper Jurassic limestone. While its exact human discovery date remains a mystery, the Austrian geographer Arnold Schmidl provided the first formal documentation and mapping in 1863. Later, the renowned Romanian speleologist Emil Racoviță conducted extensive explorations between 1921 and 1923, later detailing the cave's origins in his 1927 work, Speologia.
The cave's formation is tied to the collapse of an entrance sinkhole, which created a dry void that began trapping ice during glaciations roughly 3,500 years ago. Today, the cave contains an estimated 75,000 cubic meters of ice, with some sections reaching thicknesses of 20 meters. The environment is remarkably stable, with temperatures fluctuating between -7 °C in winter and +1 °C in summer, maintaining an average of 0 °C in the tourist-accessible areas.
The interior is a complex network of chambers, including the Great Hall, which features an ice cliff nearly 18 meters tall overlooking the Pool of Ice. Beyond the public areas, the Church houses over 100 ice stalagmites, while other sections like the Great Reservation remain restricted for scientific research. The cave also supports unique life, including small beetles known as Pholeuon prozerpinae glaciale and resident bat populations. Historically, the site was part of a larger karst system where surface water from the Ocoale Valley eventually migrated underground, carving the passages that define this frozen landscape.
