The Seattle Mariners are the only active MLB franchise to never reach the World Series.
In short: Born from a lawsuit and sustained by a video game giant, the Seattle Mariners occupy a unique space in baseball history. Despite fielding legendary talent and setting single-season win records, the club remains the only active major league team that has never appeared in the sport's championship final.
The Mariners were established in 1977 as a direct result of legal action. After the Seattle Pilots moved to Milwaukee in 1970, local officials sued the American League for breach of contract. The city eventually secured an expansion team, which played its early years in the multi-purpose Kingdome before moving to T-Mobile Park in 1999.
The franchise's most iconic era occurred between 1995 and 2001, anchored by stars like Ken Griffey Jr., Randy Johnson, and Edgar Martínez. In 2001, the team achieved a historic 116-win season, tying the 1906 Chicago Cubs for the most wins in a single season. Despite this dominance, the team entered a 21-year playoff drought immediately following that campaign, a period of mediocrity that only ended in 2022.
Ownership has been as unconventional as the team's history. In 1992, Nintendo of America purchased the struggling franchise, with CEO Hiroshi Yamauchi seeking to thank the city for his company's success, despite never having attended a baseball game himself. The team was later sold to a partnership led by John W. Stanton in 2016, though Nintendo retained a ten percent stake.
The club's quest for a World Series appearance remains ongoing. While they secured an AL West title in 2025 and advanced to a Game 7 in the playoffs, they ultimately fell short. As of the end of the 2025 season, the franchise holds an all-time record of 3,689 wins and 4,022 losses, underscoring the long, often difficult road the team has traveled since its inception.
