How a colonial meeting ground became the heart of Macau's public life
In short: Senado Square is more than just a picturesque plaza in Macau. Once a bustling hub for 16th-century diplomacy between Portuguese and Chinese officials, this triangular space has transformed from a transit zone into a protected pedestrian landmark, capturing the complex layers of history embedded in its European-style architecture.
Located in the Sé district, Senado Square serves as a vital anchor for the UNESCO Historic Centre of Macau. Its name derives from the Leal Senado, a historic meeting hall that facilitated cross-cultural interaction between Portuguese and Chinese authorities from the 16th through the 18th centuries. Today, the Leal Senado Building remains a prominent fixture overlooking the 3,700-square-meter site, which connects the Largo do São Domingos to the Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro.
The square's physical identity has shifted significantly over time. In 1940, officials installed a garden featuring a bronze monument of Vicente Nicolau de Mesquita, who was depicted drawing a sword. This statue became a flashpoint during the 12-3 incident, as Mesquita was held responsible for the deaths of numerous Qing Chinese soldiers. Following the removal of the statue, authorities replaced it with a fountain that remains a central feature of the plaza today.
By the early 1990s, the square underwent a major urban renewal project. Planners replaced former traffic lanes and parking areas with traditional Portuguese paving, establishing the site as a pedestrian-only zone to accommodate growing tourism. Beyond its role as a heritage site, the square has long functioned as a stage for public life, hosting everything from military inspections by former governors to flea markets and film productions. Its cultural significance is so deeply ingrained that the Banco Nacional Ultramarino highlighted the location on the front of its 100 patacas banknote issued in 2005.
